PITSBURG – Franklin Monroe came away with the championship as eight Cross County Conference volleyball teams competed in the Greenville Federal Volleyball Invitational on Saturday at Franklin Monroe.
“They did a great job,” Franklin Monroe volleyball coach Angie Filbrun said of her team’s play in the tournament. “Worked hard all day and played well as a team together. Fun win for them.”
The opening round of the tournament began with Franklin Monroe defeating Mississinawa Valley, Ansonia defeating Newton, Tri-Village defeating Bradford and Arcanum defeating Tri-County North.
Franklin Monroe beat Ansonia and Arcanum beat Tri-Village in the semifinals. FM then beat Arcanum 25-16, 25-16 to win the championship.
Filbrun was excited to see her team in complete control on Saturday against a tough Arcanum squad.
“That’s a tough team,” she said. “Tough team. We play them on Tuesday night, and it’s going to be a totally different ballgame.”
After losing in the semifinals, Tri-Village beat Ansonia in the third place match.
In the consolation bracket, Mississinawa Valley beat Newton and Tri-County North beat Bradford. Tri-County North then beat Mississinawa Valley in the fifth place match while Newton beat Bradford in the seventh place match.
“It’s just a fun way to kick off the season,” Filbrun said of the tournament.
